SAINTS TRIP-UP SPARTAN WRESTLERS

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri Baptist men's wrestling recorded one pin and four victories on Wednesday night, but suffered a 10-point loss at the hands of Maryville University 31-21.

The Spartans began the evening with consecutive wins at 125 and 133lbs. Detorious Prayther, currently ranked seventh in the NAIA, won his match against Maryville's Brandon Oshiro by a 13-8 decision to put MBU on the board. Chris Padilla notched a win by forfeit at 133 to make it a quick 9-0 lead.

Just as things seemed to be going the way of the Spartans, things quickly changed. The Saints rattled-off five consecutive victories and put MBU back on its heels. Tyrell Galloway put Maryville on the board with a 7-1 decision over Esmond Ford and started the comeback.

At 149lbs, Keenan Hagerty posted the first of two pins on the night for Maryville as MBU's Alejandro Wajner went down to tie the dual. A win by Joey Moorhouse by forfeit at 157 gave the Saints their first lead of the night. This lead was never relinquished.

Christian Loges pinned Davis Keleher at 165lbs to make it a 21-9 Maryville advantage and doubled the Spartan deficit. At this point, the 174lb bout seemed to be a vital one for MBU to put into the win column, but Marvio Tischhauser took the match. He defeated sophomore A.J. Carter-Johnson by a 16-5 major decision and increased the Maryville lead to 25-9.

Both teams traded forfeit decisions at 184 and 197lbs, which secured the win for the Saints. MBU collected a pin by Julius Anglikas over Morgan Dension in the heavyweight battle, but Maryville won the war in the end.

The Spartans will have just over a week to recover before a home dual against McKendree University on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. The dual is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
