ST. LOUIS [RESULTS] - The Missouri Baptist men's wrestling team won their first dual of the season on Wednesday night against the first year program Lyon College Scots. The Spartans won 34-16, and improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Spartans looked to bounce back against the Scots, a first year, all-freshman team, after dropping their first dual of the season last week against Williams Baptist. The Dual began in the 125 weight class where junior Demarcus Gurlly squared off against Dustin Miller of Lyon College. Gurlly pulled off the narrow victory, 8-6, to give the Spartans the early 3-0 lead. The Spartans then earned a forfeit at the 133 weight class to give them a 9-0 lead.
The Scots answered back in the 141 weight class when Robb Rodriguez of Lyon College pinned Sophomore Andrew Wallace at the 6:41 mark of the match to cut the MBU lead down to 9-6. Tyler Klinkhammer earned a technical fall over Zach Della Porta, 15-0 in the 149 weight class to extend the Spartan lead to 14-6. The Scots, Sky Walker beat Matt Behr by major decision in the 157 weight class to keep the dual close at 14-10.
The Spartans took control of the dual from there. Sophomore Elmer Francisco defeated Connor Webber by major decision in the 165 weight class to extend the lead to 18-10. Andrew Carter-Johnson put the dual out of reach in the 174 weight class when he pinned Christian Mata just thirty three seconds into the match. This put MBU up 24-10, and squashed any hopes of a Lyon comeback.
Fredrick Endert of Lyon College did pick up the fall at the 2:29 mark of the 197 weight class match over MBU's Kyle Benz to give the Scots six more points. The Spartans would recive a forfeit victory in the Heavyweight class to make the final 34-16 in favor of Missouri Baptist.
The Spartans will visit the NCAA Div. II No. 6 ranked McKendree University Bearcats on Friday, November 7th. The dual is set to begin at 7pm.
