ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University men's wrestling team capped off the regular season with a lopsided 51-0 win over AMC opponent Lincoln College on Thursday night inside the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports & Recreation Complex. It marks the first shutout victory for the Spartans since Dec. 15, 2012 when they defeated Truett-McConnell University, 49-0, at the Benedictine College Raven Duals.
MBU improved its 2019-20 dual record to 4-2 with wins over AMC foes Hannibal-LaGrange, Central Baptist, Lindenwood-Belleville and Lincoln. Thursday served as the final tune-up for all wrestlers prior to next Saturday's American Midwest Conference Championship that will be hosted on the MBU campus.
While 30 of MBU's 51 points came via forfeits at the 141, 174, 184, 197 and 285-pound weight classes, the Spartans still managed to clean up shop in the five matches that were contested.
Missouri Baptist sophomore
Jonathan Cochrum registered his first win of the season and got the ball rolling for the Spartans with a 11-4 decision Lynx 125-pounder Jack Hale. Cochrum outscored Hale 8-2 in the final two periods.
At 133, Lincoln's Noah Mayes got the first takedown, however, sophomore
Cameron Steinhoff reversed the momentum and controlled the rest of the match. Steinhoff led 10-5 after the first period and came up just one point shy of a tech fall with a 21-7 win by major decision.
149-pounder
Bryce Bachowski improved to 12-6 on the year with a 17-2 tech fall win over Lynx wrestler Dominic Tenayuca.
Junior
Steven Weathers picked up the first pin of the evening at the 1:04 mark defeating Easton Norris. The Highland Park, Ill. native is now 18-7 overall and was recently ranked No. 15 in the NAIA in the latest individual rankings.
The final contested match took place at the 165-pound division between MBU's
Joe Stegall and LCs Devion Yancey. Locked in a 0-0 stalemate after two periods, Stegall got on the board with an escape to begin the third and slowly, but surely pulled away in a 6-0 shutout win.
In exhibition action at 197 pounds, NAIA's No. 8-ranked
Owen Braungardt overpowered Desiregon Keys pinning the Lincoln grappler in 1 minute, 53 seconds.
