ST.LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist men's wrestling team went 2-0 on Saturday at the Ottawa University Duals. The Spartans showed their strength against Ottawa University, winning 47-9. MBU also proved that they could win a heavily contested match by defeating Wayland Baptist 22-21.
Demarcus Gurley, William Upson, Elmer Francisco, and Windsor Eaves all won by fall in the dual against Ottawa University. The Spartans were also awarded three forfeits on their way to the 47-9 victory.
MBU had their hands full in the dual against Wayland Baptist. The dual went back and forth and came down to the last match. Demarcus Gurley started the dual with a win by fall to put the Spartans ahead. Wayland Baptist answered by winning four straight matches. After MBU was awarded a forfeit in the 165 weight class, Windsor Eaves earned a victory by major decision in the 174 weight class. Wayland Baptist picked up another match in the 184 weight class, that made the last two matches must wins for the Spartans. Andrew Mahone won by decision in the 197 weight class, and Luis Contreras won by major decision in the 285 weight class to give the Spartans the 22-21 victory.
The Spartans will be back in action on February 5th when they travel to Maryville University.
