MEN'S WRESTLING OPENS SEASON WITH LOSS TO OKLAHOMA CITY

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist Men's Wrestling opened its season with a 39-4 loss to Oklahoma City University on Wednesday.

Oklahoma City proved to be a tough matchup for Missouri Baptist. The Spartans were only able to come away with a victory in one of the 10 individual matches.

That victory belonged to sophomore Andrew Mahone in the 197-pound weight class. Mahone defeated Cody Sivertsen by major decision 13-4 to give the Spartans points toward their eventual total of four.

Oklahoma City won three matches by technical fall, three by major decision, two by decision and one via a Missouri Baptist forfeit.

The tournament also featured a second round match against Wayland Baptist. That matchup was close throughout, but the Spartans eventually fell 28-18.

Demarcus Gurlly pinned his opponent to start the match and give Missouri Baptist an early 5-0 lead. Wayland Baptist then won the following two matches to take a 7-5 lead. Missouri Baptist re-took the lead after Wayland Baptist forfeited the 149-pound weight class, but failed to win any of the following four matches.

That streak stopped when Mahone pinned his opponent at 197 pounds. It was the sophmore's second victory on the day. However, it wouldn't turn out to be enough in the defeat.
