ST. LOUIS – [UNC WILMINGTON BOX] [COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON BOX] Heading into day two of the inaugural season, the Spartans were encouraged by its first point in day one of competition at the Stetson University (Fla.) Invitational. Missouri Baptist built on its successes.
Missouri Baptist (0-5) grabbed its first win of the day at No. 1 against UNC Wilmington. Hannah Carey and Julia Whitfield picked-up their second win in four matches in fine fashion. The duo cruised to its second, straight sets win, 21-19 and 21-18.
The Spartans were swept in straight sets at Nos. 2-5, but another win marked improvement as the teams continue to adjust to the sand game and to playing some of the top collegiate competition NCAA Division I has to offer.
In the second match of the day, the Spartan No. 2 team of Marion Couraud and Mallory Dillon grabbed a victory after forcing a tiebreak set. Couraud and Dillon easily took the first set 21-12, but the second set went to the Cougars.College of Charleston's Maddie Hills and Katja Ehlers won 21-14 and forced a tiebreak set.
The Spartans were up to the task in the final set. Dillon and Couraud rallied to win 15-13 and grabbed their second win as a team on the weekend.
Things don't get much easier for the Spartans in the coming week as they travel to Lincoln, Neb, to face the Cornhuskers of University of Nebraska for the team's first single dual of the season. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Hawks Championship Center on the campus of Nebraska.
