SCOTS TOPPLE SPARTANS IN SERIES FINALE

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Two big innings help the Scots defeat the Spartans 9-5 in the series finale. Lyon scored three in the second and four in the fifth, handing Missouri Baptist their second loss in conference play.

A day after a doubleheader that yielded 42 combined runs, Alex Hanft and Cole Jenkins were called upon in rubber match. Both pitchers held the loud offenses to a quiet first inning but ran into some trouble in the second.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Caleb Dean doubled to center. A Domonique Hernandez infield single would advance Dean to third base. Senior catcher Tommy Nawa was up to the task, plating Dean with a sacrifice fly, giving the Spartans an early lead for the third straight game.

The Scots struck back fast with some help from the Spartans. An error and five walks in the inning would put Lyon ahead 3-1 at the end of the second.

A leadoff walk in the top of the third brought Mason Washington to the plate. Washington hit the 0-1 offering from Jenkins off the left field wall, scoring Gabriel Castillo and trimming the Scot lead to one.

In the bottom half of the third, Zane Pritchard doubled with two outs bringing up Logan Reddick. Reddick singled to left field and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Pritchard scored before the final out, extending their lead to 4-2.

Lyon struck again in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles from Reddick and Tanner Seibel. Walks and sloppy defense handed over two more before the end of the inning. The four-run inning put the Spartans down 8-2 through five.

The Spartans yielded another run in the sixth but got two back in the top of the seventh. Wayne Roberts, running for Tommy Nawa who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch from Marcel Terrazas. Castillo drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly that plated General McArthur.

Missouri Baptist brought home one more run in the ninth on Hernandez's sacrifice fly. The comeback ran out of steam quickly though, as the Spartans fell to the Scots 9-5.

The loss gives MBU a 1-2 AMC record and a 5-10 record overall. The Spartans take on Williams Baptist College in their next match up on Friday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Spartan Field.
