SPARTANS GO UNDEFEATED IN CLAY PFEIFFER TOURNAMENT

ST. LOUIS – [GAME ONE] [GAME TWO] Missouri Baptist baseball extended their winning streak to seven after sweeping the Clay Pfeiffer Memorial Tournament. The Spartans dropped Huntington 7-1 in the first game and College of the Ozarks 8-3 in game two.

Austin Schiber took the mound in game one for MBU with high hopes to keep the five-game winning streak intact.  The senior got off to a tremendous start, holding the Foresters quiet through the first three innings.

Schiber's hot start was backed by the hefty Spartan bats. In the bottom of the first inning, with one out, Drew Brooks hit a solo home run putting the home team up early. It was the second consecutive day that Brooks' homered, and it gave him his fourth of the year.

General McArthur widened the gap in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff walk to John Hagan, McArthur blasted a two-run home run to left field. His second home run of the year gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead after three innings.

A sacrifice fly from Donovan Clark put Huntington on the board and cut the lead to 3-1.

The bottom of the fourth saw four Spartans cross home plate. Jonathon Pasillas drove home one run on a double down the left field line. Domonique Hernandez brought one home with a sacrifice fly, Hagan singled a run home, and McArthur picked up his third RBI of the game with a sac fly.

Much like Friday, the pitching held up the lead. Schiber went on to throw six innings of one run ball while striking out six. Brandon Downey pitched a flawless seventh to close out the game for a 7-1 final score.

Bryan Morales got the call for game two against College of the Ozarks. The game stayed scoreless for the first two and a half frames.

Missouri Baptist's offense could not be held down for long.

Bobcat errors allowed the first two runs to come across in the bottom of the third inning. Mason Washington doubled home a run, Wayne Roberts singled in Washington, and the big blow came when Hernandez plated a pair with his double. After three innings the Spartans led 6-0.

College of the Ozarks got three back in the top of the fourth on three hits and one MBU error.

Dillon Harp kept the bats hot when he led off the fourth with a double. Freshman Nick Politte was brought in to run for him and scored on Gabriel Castillo's RBI single to left field. The final run came home in the bottom of the fifth on Harp's RBI single.

The bullpen took care of the rest, giving MBU an 8-3 win. After a rough start to the season, Bryan Morales bounced back nicely on Saturday throwing four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out five. Trevor Chaney and Hayden Crowe held things scoreless out of the bullpen for the final three innings.

Missouri Baptist will look to keep the wins coming in Tuesday's doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Hannibal, Missouri.
