CREVE COEUR, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist University men's tennis team was able to find its groove Wednesday afternoon as it picked up win No. 2 on the season by defeating Baker University by a score of 8-1. The Wildcats out of Baldwin City, Kan., are a team the Spartans could see later on in April at the Unaffiliated Group tournament which includes teams from the American Midwest Conference (AMC) and Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The beginning of the match was tightly contested and Missouri Baptist came away with a slight 2-1 edge following the doubles competition. At No. 1 doubles, James Tobin and Ricardo Martin defeated Baker's top group of Thomas Irick and Conner Petty, 8-3. Both Nos. 2 and 3 doubles finished with identical 8-6 scores. MBU's Dylan Walker and Lucas Lobao secured the second point for the Spartans at No. 2 doubles.

The back and forth action continued into the singles competition and was evident by two matches going into third set and a tiebreaker at No. 1. Tobin prevailed stealing a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) win over one of the Wildcats' top players Gabriel Marques. Ricardo Martin was the only MBU athlete to finish with a clean and complete set as he defeated Taylor Ficke 6-0, 6-2. Drew Davis was on pace for a 6-0 decision in set 2 of his match, however, his match was retired at the end of the afternoon as the Spartans picked up the 8-1 team victory.

With the win, Missouri Baptist improved to 2-6, while Baker dropped to 4-5 overall. The Spartans will be back in action for the third time in as many days as it hosts Missouri Valley College tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the Creve Coeur Racquet Club tomorrow.
