ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University men's tennis team finished the 2017-18 regular season on a high note splitting Friday's matches versus No. 6-ranked William Woods and St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
In the first match of the day, the Spartans were swept 9-0 by the sixth-ranked Owls, but the final score doesn't quite tell the entire story. Missouri Baptist was quite competitive in the doubles competition with each going at least 11 games. In No. 1 doubles,
James Tobin and
Ricardo Martin went head-to-head with Javier Callejo and Christopher Vleeming, who were ranked No. 4 in the latest Oracle/ITA NAIA Men's Tennis rankings, and were edged 8-5.
Dylan Walker and
Lucas Lobao also ended in an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles, while
James Wright and
Don Kern scored three in their doubles match.
Much like doubles, the Spartans didn't concede the singles wins to the Owls without some resistance. William Woods' top four spots were occupied by players present in the top 50 of the ITA rankings. Walker went to three sets with Christopher Vleeming (#13), 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Tobin lost 6-3, 6-2 to sixth-ranked Javier Callejo, while
Lucas Lobao went 6-4, 6-4 with Oscar Barreiro (#21).
In the second match of the day, the Spartans overwhelmed American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe St. Louis Pharmacy. All three doubles teams went without surrendering a game to the Eutectics. In similar fashion, MBU was near perfect against STLCOP in singles play. Walker, Lobao, Wright and
Austin Hale all captured straight-set wins, while Kern and
Matthew Vandiver allowed just one point to St. Louis Pharmacy.
With the split, the Missouri Baptist men's tennis team will sport a 6-8 overall record heading into next weekend's AMC/HAAC Unaffiliated Group Tournament, which will be held in St. Louis. Stay tuned to mbuspartans.com for more information on the bracket and schedule once it has been released.
