ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Baseball busted out for 19 runs on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of William Woods. The Spartans finish the regular season with an overall record of 28-16 (20-8 in the AMC). Prior to the game, 11 seniors were honored in a ceremony at home plate.
Â
William Woods struck first in the opening inning, tagging MBU starter
Alex Hanft for two runs. They added one more in the second and the Spartans faced a 3-1 deficit. It was at that point, however, that things got ugly for the visitors.
Â
With two on and two outs,
General McArthur delivered a two RBI single. That started a carousel of MBU hitters to the plate. A base hit from
Domonique Hernandez gave the Spartans the lead before
Mason Washington's fifth home run of the year brought in three more.
Roosevelt Henderson was next at the plate and the big first baseman made it back to back jacks with his fourth homer of the season. When the dust settled, the Spartans put up nine runs on six hits to take a 10-3 lead.
Â
The Owls refused to roll over and after six innings, they'd cut the MBU lead to 11-8. So the Spartan offense went to work again in the bottom of the seventh. With one run already across,
Mason Washington came through once again. This time, the bases were loaded when the Modesto, Calif. native doubled to deep center to score two. The Spartans continued to pile on with help from walks and errors by William Woods. After a two-RBI single from
Gabriel Castillo made it 18-9,
General McArthur executed a squeeze bunt to score
Tyler Schmidt from third and enact the 10-run after seven rule to end the game.
Â
The offense was powered all day by
Mason Washington who finished 4-5 with 7 RBIs.
General McArthur went 3-6 with 3 RBIs. McArthur scored two runs as well.
Â
Alex Hanft got the start on the mound and allowed two earned runs in three innings. After sitting in the dugout for two long stretches while the offense racked up 10 runs, Hanft gave way to the bullpen.
Matt Huss and
Trevor Chaney combined to finish the final four innings.
