ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University men's tennis season came to a close Friday evening after falling in the semifinals of the Unaffiliated Group Tournament – AMC/HAAC to top-seeded William Woods, which was also ranked sixth in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Spartans finished 2017-18 with an overall record of 7-9.

Both sets of Nos. 1 and 2 doubles reached at least 10 games with William Woods taking the top spot in, 8-3. The closest of the doubles matches was No. 2 where Dylan Walker and Lucas Lobao won five games before surrendering an 8-5 win to Spartans.
 
Needing just two points to finish out the match and earn a berth into the Unaffiliated Group Tournament final on Saturday, William Woods won in straight sets behind the strong play of Christopher Vleeming at No. 2 singles, while Javier Callejo defeated MBU men's tennis standout James Tobin at No. 1 singles.

In the quarterfinals match, Missouri Baptist picked up its seventh win of the year and second over the Wildcats this season. To begin the doubles competition, Dylan Walker and Lucas Lobao set the tone early and cruised to an 8-0 sweep at No. 2. The Spartans collected their second point via an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles by James Tobin and Ricardo Martin. Baker narrowed the gap by defeating James Wright and Don Kern at No. 3 by a score of 8-4.
 
The Wildcats evened the match at 2-2 to open singles play as Thomas Irick (BU) defeated Dylan Walker, 6-2, 6-1. The next wave of matches went to the Spartans with Lucas Lobao winning No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and James Tobin narrowly defeating Gabriel Marques 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. It was then a race to the finish for the remaining matchups. Ricardo Martin clinched the deciding point at No. 4 singles bouncing back from a first set loss, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
