COLUMBIA, Ky. – Missouri Baptist Men's Basketball (3-1) upset previously unbeaten Lindsey Wilson College (4-1) 92-85 on Friday night in the opening game of the Brown & Brown Sleep Inn Classic.
The Spartans knew what they were in for against a high-flying Blue Raiders squad averaging over 95 points per game through their first four contests of the season. So it was no surprise when the first half on Friday night turned into a track meet.
The teams traded baskets back and forth for the first 13 minutes of the opening half before Mo. Bap finally used an 8-0 run to take a 42-28 lead. The Spartans shot a cool 58% from the field (20-34 FG) and knocked down 9-18 from behind the 3PT line in route to a 54-42 halftime advantage.
Lindsey Wilson fired back in the second half but could not trim the deficit to less than three points. Every time the Blue Raiders got close, senior
James McKelvin was there for a timely bucket. McKelvin posted 14 of his game-high 26 points in the second half. The Hazelwood East alum tied a career-high for the second time in four games this season.
Missouri Baptist made 17 of 19 free throw attempts in the second half and salted the game away despite a dip in their field goal percentage numbers. Aside from McKelvin, three other Spartans reached double figures.
Brendon Hardy and
Hasaan DeCarolis each had 19 while Trey Allen set a new career-high with 13 points.
Allen was also just a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. The Spartans dominated their opponent on the glass for the fourth straight game, this time by a 41-27 margin.
Senior
Jahmouri Robinson crept ever closer to the MBU career assist record. Robinson added nine to his total on Friday night and is now 25 away from tying Will Harrington's mark of 367.
The Spartans are right back at it on Saturday afternoon. They'll meet No. 21 Campbellsville in the second and final game of the Brown & Brown Sleep Inn Classic. Tip time is scheduled for 4 pm in Columbia, Ky.
