ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri Baptist Baseball dropped a wild 18-13 affair with Harris-Stowe (12-11, 5-2 AMC) on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans led on three different occasions but ultimately could not slow down the Hornets on the defensive side of the rubber.
Â
Harris-Stowe jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Mo. Bap starter
Gary Watkins in the opening frame but the Spartans responded with a big top of the second. Eight men stepped to the plate with five coming across to score. After
Michael McGhee tied it with a one-out double,
Drew Brooks launched his fourth home run of the year. The three-run shot gave MBU a 5-2 lead.
Â
The Hornets quickly bounced back with a three-run homer of their own in the bottom half and from that point forward it was game-on. It was tied at seven heading into the seventh before MBU once again found some separation, at least temporarily. Home runs from
Sid Kumar and
Michael McGhee, two batters apart, gave the visiting side an 11-7 advantage.
Â
This time, though, Harris-Stowe came back with a haymaker. Aided by two MBU errors, the Hornets touched up the Spartan bullpen for a pair of three-run homers. After sending a dozen men to the plate, the inning mercifully ended with a 14-11 score.
Â
Despite another home run from
Caleb Dean in the top of the eighth, HSSU pulled away one final time with four runs bottom of the frame. The Spartans went in order in the ninth and saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.
Â
The loss dropped Mo. Bap to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the AMC. They'll face (20) Lyon College (Ark.) in a three-game series at home this coming weekend. First pitch of Thursday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 pm. Due to forecasted rain, the series will once again be played on the astro turf at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Mo.Â
