ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist University women's tennis team recorded its second consecutive 9-0 sweep of Fontbonne University, this time in the Spartans' home opener at Creve Coeur Racquet Club on Tuesday.
In all, nine different Spartans contributed to the win over the Griffins. MBU set the tone early on with
Dani Stevenson and
Emily Brown locking up an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Fontbonne's Chloe Loehr and Jordan Sampson. At No. 2 doubles,
Hannah Chaney and
Elizabeth Siegfried teamed up and blanked the Griffins, 8-0, while newcomers
Laura Baracaldo and Fancielly Morena followed suit against their No. 3 doubles opposition.
Maria Brandt, a freshman from Dardenne Prairie, Mo., got the nod at No. 1 singles and defeated FBU's Chloe Loehr, 6-1, 6-1. Fontbonne's No. 2 Jordan Sampson was able to avoid a straight-set loss to
Rafaela Davide winning one game in the final set, 6-0, 6-1. The rest of the Spartans' lineup registered straight-set victories –
Emily Brown at No. 3,
Elizabeth Siegfried at No. 4,
Geena Novelly at No. 5 and
Laura Baracaldo at No. 6.
Up next for the Spartans is an American Midwest Conference matchup with St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The home match at Creve Coeur Racquet Club is set to start at 3 p.m.
