DEFENSE FALTERS AS SPARTANS DROP SERIES FINALE

ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Baseball (19-11, 11-8 AMC) dropped a 6-4 decision to Central Baptist College (15-18, 8-9 AMC) on Tuesday at Spartan Field. The Spartans made four errors leading to five of CBC's six runs.

After winning both games of the doubleheader on Monday, the attempt at the sweep got off to a good start in the opening inning. Caleb Dean took the first pitch he saw and lined a leadoff homerun over the wall in left field. Unfortunately, that would be the last mistake Mustang starting pitcher Mark Rucker would make all day.

Josh Sieglitz made the start for MBU and pitched well for 6+ innings. Sieglitz, however, was let down by the defense behind on more than one occasion. An error in the second inning and two more in the fourth led to four CBC runs. Another wild throw in the ninth topped off a forgettable day in the field for the Spartans.

Rucker struck out nine and allowed just four hits in seven innings before giving way to the bullpen after 103 pitches. The Spartans made a late push with a run in the eighth and then had the tying run at second base in the ninth but they were unable to cash in as Gabriel Castillo flew out to deep center to end the game.

Missouri Baptist continues a marathon nine-game week with a doubleheader on Wednesday against Harris-Stowe. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm at the Spartan Baseball Field.
