SAUGET, Ill. – MBU starter
Masen Palmier put together eight dominant innings as the Spartans shutout Lindenwood-Belleville in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. (RV) Mo. Bap finished the regular season with an overall record of 33-15 and an AMC mark of 20-10. They will be the No. 3 seed in next week's AMC Postseason Tournament.
In the early going on Saturday, neither side could generate much offense. After a half-hour rain delay before the first pitch, it took three innings before the day's first runs crossed the plate. It was in that third frame that
Michael McGhee drew a walk from the leadoff spot. With two outs,
Hunter Hill doubled into the corner. Darius Ford, the Lynx leftfielder, slipped on the wet turf, allowing McGhee to come all the way around from first for the game's first score.
Lindenwood-Belleville never seriously threatened against sophomore pitcher
Masen Palmier. Palmier allowed one hit in each of the third and fourth innings. He walked two and also hit a man but the Lynx stranded all five without advancing any of the baserunners past second.
The MBU offense provided Palmier plenty of insurance with four runs in the final two frames. In the eighth, an RBI single by
DeShawn Lookout scored
Hunter Hill to make it 2-0.
Jonathon Pasillas drove in Lookout with a sac fly and
Mason Washington later scored on a passed ball. In the ninth, Lookout contributed again—this time with a double to bring in
Caleb Dean.
Manny Pizarro relieved Palmier for the final three outs and posted a clean final frame. Palmier finished with nine strikeouts and improved to 4-0.
Offensively, the top three in the MBU order continued to rake.
Caleb Dean,
Hunter Hill, and
DeShawn Lookout went a combined 8-12 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
The Spartans and Lynx will meet up again on Wednesday in the first round of the AMC Postseason Tournament. First pitch at the Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin, Mo. is scheduled for 7 pm. All four days of the double-elimination tournament will be broadcasted live on the
AMC Sports Network.
