JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri Baptist Baseball needed a five-run fifth inning and a complete game from
Austin Worrell to eliminate No. 20 Lyon College in the AMC Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Spartans will now play Central Baptist on Saturday at 3 pm.
In an elimination game featuring the three-seed Spartans and the four-seed Scots, it was Lyon who drew first blood on Friday. Mo. Bap would respond in the bottom half of the opening inning with an RBI single from
DeShawn Lookout.
Lyon retook the lead in the third (2-1) before the Spartans busted out in the fifth.
Drew Brooks and
Caleb Dean began the frame with back to back singles and
Hunter Hill followed with a base hit of his own to tie the game. After Lookout walked to load the bases,
Mason Washington drove in his 39
th run of the season with yet another single.
MBU would add three more (6-2) before the third out was recorded. RBIs came from
Jonathon Pasillas,
Anthony Enwiya, and
Michael McGhee. They would pull away with runs in each of the next two innings. Dean led off with a solo homer in the sixth and Brooks drove in two with a single in the seventh.
After conceding an RBI single in the third, Mo. Bap starter
Austin Worrell settled in and didn't allow another hit until the leadoff man in the ninth. Worrell finished off the complete game with six strikeouts and just two walks. The redshirt freshman improved to 7-2.
The Spartans were scheduled to play another elimination game on Friday night but persistent rain throughout the afternoon in Joplin washed out the rest of the day's play. Instead, the Spartans and Mustangs will play at 3 pm on Saturday afternoon after Columbia and Freed-Hardeman play at noon.
If Missouri Baptist defeats CBC, they would play the loser between FHU/CC at 6 pm. For the full schedule visit
