ST. LOUIS-- Despite sporadic rain showers, Missouri Baptist Baseball (10-7) grinded out two more wins over Olivet Nazarene (2-12) on Monday to complete a four-game sweep. After taking the first game of the day 9-6, the Spartans won game two 3-2 in five innings.
Â
GAME ONE
Olivet Nazarene led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the third when the MBU offense kicked into gear.
Adrian Gutierrez led off with a single before an error and a walk set the table for
Carter Mize with one out. With the bases loaded, Mize laced a double off the right centerfield wall to score two runs. Another error by the Tigers contributed to two more runs and a 5-2 Mo. Bap lead.
Â
The Spartans stretched the advantage even further in the fifth inning. A pair of RBI doubles, one from Gutierrez and one from
Sage Voda, broke the game open.
Trey Steffler added an RBI single and
DJ Schmidt chipped in a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2 MBU.
Â
Jarrett Quinn made his second start of the season on the mound for the Spartans. Quinn allowed two runs on seven hits in five solid innings. He struck out five and walked two in route to his first career win.
Â
ONU was able to make it a game with runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings but
Aaron Jonas and
Jacob Rucker ultimately held it together to preserve the victory.
Â
GAME TWO
Just as the second game of the day got underway, the rain began to intensify. Sensing it could be a shortened series finale, the Spartans did their damage early.
DJ Schmidt led off the bottom of the first inning with his first career home run. Olivet assisted the MBU efforts with two hit batters, a balk, and a passed ball. The Spartans led 3-0 after one frame.
Â
On the other side of the ball, freshman
Sam Lehmkuhl made his first start and delivered five quality innings. After conceding just one hit in the first three innings, Lehmkuhl allowed a two singles and two unearned runs in the fourth. ONU had the tying run on but a line out to right field limited the damage.
Â
Lehmkuhl worked a perfect top of the fifth inning to ensure an official game. After one batter in the bottom of the frame, the decision was made to call it a day. The Spartans earned the 3-2 win and a four-game sweep.
Â
Missouri Baptist will return to AMC play on Tuesday against Harris-Stowe. First pitch of the doubleheader at Stars Park on the campus of HSSU is scheduled for 1 pm.
