ST. LOUIS—MBU Men's Basketball (7-5, 3-1 AMC) made it three wins in four AMC contests after a 67-58 triumph over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (formerly STLCOP) on Thursday night. The Spartans earned back to back wins for the second time this season.
The Spartans were not about to overlook a Eutectics team (1-11, 0-4 AMC) which has struggled out of the gate in the early part of the AMC schedule. However, the first half turned into a battle with MBU unable to push its lead past six points. A three by UHSP with just a second remaining in the half cut it to 29-26 heading into the locker room. Junior forward
Daishaun Woods posted 15 points (5-6 FG) in the first half alone to set a new career-high.
Missouri Baptist was able to distance itself more in the second half, starting with a 7-0 run in the opening three minutes. As was the case on Tuesday against Williams Baptist, the Spartans took full advantage of depth with all 11 available players seeing the floor.
That depth would begin to wear on the visitors as MBU started to pull away in the final 10 minutes. Freshman
Billy Francis Jr. and
Aumonie Armond converted three point attempts on three consecutive possessions to take the lead from 12 to 17 points with just over five minutes remaining.
The Spartans would cross the finish line with another double-digit victory, once again holding their opponent under 60 points for the fourth consecutive game.
Woods would finish the night with 17 points to lead MBU.
Tyrell Andrews also reached double figures with 10 points while tying for the team lead with five assists.
Billy Francis Jr. contributed a career-high nine points off the bench 16 minutes.
The task only gets tougher on Saturday as the Spartans travel to Central Baptist (7-3, 3-0 AMC). The Mustangs took care of William Woods on Thursday night to stay unbeaten in the AMC. Tipoff in Conway, Ark. on Saturday is scheduled for 3 pm.
