BATESVILLE, Ark. – Missouri Baptist Men's Basketball (9-7, 5-3 AMC) had a chance for redemption against Lyon College (6-4, 5-2 AMC) on Saturday afternoon but the Scots pulled away late for a 72-65 victory.
Not unlike the matchup from two weeks ago in St. Louis, Saturday's meeting was once again low-scoring and dominated by defense. Though MBU briefly led by five early in the first half, the majority of the opening period was played to a tie or one possession game. The Spartans shot just 34.6% (9-26) in the first half but trailed by just two (32-30) at the intermission.
The second half featured four ties and six lead changes in the first 10 minutes alone. But with 10:01 to go, the Scots hit their first three-pointer in over 15 minutes of game time and then followed with another deep ball on their next possession. The momentum had shifted in favor of the home side.
After stretching the lead to two possessions (55-50), Lyon put the clamp down on the Spartans from there on. The deficit for MBU swelled even further to double digits in the final minutes, an insurmountable hurdle against the NAIA's third ranked scoring defense.
Jadis White (17) and
John Yaeger (13) finished in double figures for the Spartans. MBU outrebounded Lyon 33-29 led by nine boards from Yaeger. The senior also chipped in four assists.
The Spartans return home to the Petty SRC next Saturday against Hannibal-LaGrange for a 3 pm tip.
