ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist Men's Basketball won its seventh game of the season on Saturday afternoon and improved to 2-0 in the AMC after an 80-67 victory over Harris-Stowe. All seven MBU victories this season have been by double-digits.
After falling behind 14-13 six minutes into the first half, the Spartans turned up their defensive intensity and took control. That would be the final time Harris-Stowe led all day.
Powered by nine Hornets' turnovers in the first 20 minutes, Missouri Baptist stretched the lead out to seven points (39-32) going into halftime. In 10 first half minutes,
Tyrell Andrews stepped forward for eight points and four rebounds.
The Spartans were sitting pretty at the midway point of the second half before Harris-Stowe made one strong push. At 60-49, the Hornets used an 8-0 run to cut the MBU lead to three.
A steal by
River Reed and a fastbreak layup for Andrews snapped MoBap out of a brief three-minute scoring drought and the visitors began to pull away from there. A two-hand slam from
John Yaeger capped off the ensuing 11-3 run and put an exclamation point on the Spartans' first victory at Harris-Stowe since 2014.
Tyrell Andrews' finished with a team-high 18 points (6-9 FG) and added two steals and five rebounds.
John Yaeger (6-10 FG) posted 12 points and seven rebounds. On a quest for 1,000 career points, Yaeger is now less than 200 away.
River Reed (11) and
Brendon Hardy (10) made it four Spartans in double figures. Reed's eight rebounds were a team-high.
Possibly the most complete line of the day belonged to point guard
Jadis White. The former Chaminade standout finished with nine points, five steals, and eight assists in 38 minutes.
The Spartans will now have more than a month's break from AMC competition. They'll travel to Lyon in Batesville, Ark. on January 6. In the meantime though, there will be plenty of non-conference basketball to be played starting Tuesday at College of the Ozarks. Tip time in Point Lookout, Mo. is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
