SPARTANS BLOWN OUT BY (RV)MIDAMERICA NAZARENE

OLATHE, Kan. – The Missouri Baptist Spartans basketball team was very simply overmatched against the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers on Friday. In their second and final game of the Jeff Uphaus Memorial Tournament MBU lost 95-61.

The game was a mismatch from the opening tip, as the Pioneers scored the first nine points and led 17-2 just three minutes and 11 seconds into the game.

The MBU offense was able to score seven points over the next three minutes to get the score back to 26-9. However, MNU would outscore the Spartans 33-13 for the remainder of the first half, including the last seven points before the break, to take a 59-22 halftime lead.

While employing a full-court press in the second half, the Spartans outscored the Pioneers 39-36. Despite those efforts, the deficit grew to as many as 41 points and never fell below 32 over the last 20 minutes.

For the second night in a row, MBU was severely outscored in the paint, this time 48-14. The Spartans also turned the ball over 17 times and now are averaging 19 per game in that category. MNU also held a 23-2 advantage in fast break points.

The Spartans were led in scoring once again by senior Tyrell Andrews and sophomore Breven McMullen, both of whom finished with 13 points. Andrews led the team in rebounds as well with five. Senior guard Jadis White had seven points and five assists in the game. The offense has been a concern early in the season as the Spartans are now averaging just 62 points per game while surrendering 89.5.

Four Pioneer players scored in double-figures, led by guard Ed Wright Jr who accounted for 21 points. Forward Anthony Brown had 19 points and an impressive 16 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

MBU comes home 0-2 after two games in this tournament. They will host St Ambrose University at the Petty SRC on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
