ST. LOUIS- The Spartans were back at home after a short stint on the road, taking on the Bethel University Wildcats.
The Spartans started with an early 4-point lead with a couple of free throws from Benjamin Sterling and a jump shot from
Breven McMullen but unfortunately it didn't last long. At the 17-minute mark, the Wildcats pulled ahead and maintained the lead for the next six minutes. MBU may have been down, but they were still fighting, not letting Bethel pull far ahead, keeping it at most a five-point ball game.
With the Spartans down 18-15, MBU took advantage of a Wildcat turnover to even the score. With a Bethel player failing to pick off the ball,
Evan Palmquist saw his opportunity and sunk a wide open three, bringing the score 18-18. On the Spartans next possession,
D'Mari Wiltz, sped the ball up the court to where McMullen was coming up the far side, completely unguarded. Wiltz fed his fellow junior the ball, where McMullen leapt towards the basket, dunking the ball through the hoop. The Spartans had made their comeback and it had turned into a very different game.
The Spartans had a number of fast breaks that spurred on their momentum in the last ten minutes of the half. The Dunk by McMullen was just the start, and at the 8:25 mark he was once again on the fast break. This time bringing the ball up himself, the Park Hills, Mo. native made his way to the basket and around a Bethel player to sink the layup. A minute 45 seconds later McMullen was back on the fastbreak for the third time. After sprinting up the court, the junior received a long pass coming from
Preston Fortner to make his way past a wildcat defender to score another layup.
Keyyaun Batchman got in on the fastbreak action after securing the defensive rebound and sprinting up the court and through multiple Bethel players. Batchman was able to find his lane making his way to the basket for the layup.
In the last 10 minutes of the half, MBU set the pace and ultimately outscored Bethel 25-10 to take the lead. The second half went in much the same way, with the Spartans dominating the half.
McMullen and Palmquist continued to pave the way for the Spartans, leading the team in points. McMullen kicked off the scoring in the half with a good jump shot only ten seconds into the half. Palmquist followed suit with a couple of three pointers, further solidifying the Spartans lead.
After securing a solid 20-point lead, the Spartans didn't let up. The team continued to stay aggressive, making plays and drawing fouls. One such moment came by way of
Sterling Benjamin with six minutes left in the half. After cutting into the middle of the paint, Benjamin went up for a jump shot and regardless of the Wildcat foul, made the basket. The Dallas, Tx. product proceeded to step up to the free throw line, sinking the and one.
Benjamin's jump shot and free throw combo kicked off the Spartans 10-point scoring streak that brought them to a 33-point lead. Though the steak came to an end with four minutes left in the game, the Spartans only gave up six more points while putting up another eight to secure the win. They came out on top, with a 97-62 victory.
Breven McMullen led the Spartans on the scoring front, posting a career-high 33 points. He now holds the record for the most points scored by a Spartans in a single game this season. No surprise to anyone,
Evan Palmquist was a top scorer for MBU once again, posting 16 points during the game.
The Spartans have now extended their winning streak to seven, only dropping their first two games of the season. MBU will be looking to keep that going with their next regular season game on Wednesday (Dec 6) where they will face off against St. Ambrose once again.
