SPARTANS WIN TWO MORE AT THE CAJUN COLLISION

STERLINGTON, La. – The Missouri Baptist Spartans are coming home undefeated on the season. On Saturday MBU beat Southwestern Christian University 6-0 in their first game of the day, then knocked off No. 19 University of Science and Arts 3-1.  The Spartans went 4-0 on their two-day trip to the Cajun Collision in Sterlington, La.

GAME ONE vs. Southwestern Christian University
Behind six strong innings from starter Sam Grace the Spartans were able to claim a 6-0 win over the Eagles.

Grace surrendered just two three hits while striking out six and walking four. SCU was never able to really mount a serious offensive threat in the game as they got as far as third base in only the first and fourth innings.

The Spartans got on the board early in this one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Blayne Yarger led off with a walk and advanced to second on a balk. A single by Cesar Soto moved Yarger to third with no one out. Alex Adams would single home Yarger while Soto advanced from first to third. Later in the inning Jakob Kouneski would single to drive home Soto and MBU led 2-0.

MBU would score again in the fourth when Joe Schmidt led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a DJ Schmidt sacrifice bunt. Schmidt would come around to score on a Soto single to right field to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

The Spartans tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, all coming with two outs. After Yarger and Soto were retired, Adams, Cole Robinson, and Kouneski all doubled in consecutive at bats, with the latter two each registering an RBI. Noah Hemphill would follow that with a single for the fourth consecutive two-out hit and that would drive home Kouneski to make the final margin 6-0.

Soto, Adams, Hemphill and Joe Schmidt all had two hits in the game. Kouneski had 2 RBI.

Making his debut, Skout Rallo came on to finish the game out in the seventh inning, retiring all three batters he faced.

GAME TWO vs. (19) University of Science and Arts (Okla.)
The Spartans plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie in topping the 19th-ranked USAO Drovers 3-1.

MBU got on the board first when Blayne Yarger singled to start the game then advanced to second on a groundout. Alex Adams singled up the middle and after three batters the Spartans were up 1-0.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double and an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

The Spartans have done a good job all season of capitalizing once they get into a team's bullpen and this game was no different. Following a pitching change to start the final frame, Noah Hemphill greeted him by reaching on an error. MBU played small-ball by laying down a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position. DJ Schmidt was hit by a pitch and Yarger singled to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, it was Alex Adams' turn to play the hero as he singled to score Hemphill with what would become the game-winning RBI. Cole Robinson would walk to pad the lead to 3-1, and that was the final.

Adams had two hits and two RBIs in the game. Yarger had two hits also.

Billy Heil got the start for MBU and went the first four innings giving up five hits, while striking out three and walking one. Micah Diamond saw his first action of the season by coming on in relief for the final three innings. He got the win by going three innings and striking out three with no walks. Due to the seventh inning offense, Diamond got the win.

The Spartans went 4-0 in the Cajun Collision and are now 6-0 on the young season, with wins over sixth-ranked Faulkner University and now 19th- ranked USAO. Through six games, Adams is hitting a lofty .650 on the season with 10 RBIs. Robinson has three home runs and leads the team with 11 RBIs. Leading the pitching staff thus far is Sam Grace, who is 2-0 on the season with 3.00 ERA.

MBU will be back in action for their home opener this Friday when they play host to Missouri Valley College with games at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
