ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Baptist Spartans winning streak reached five with two victories over the Central Baptist College Mustangs on Friday. The Spartans won both in commanding fashion; 10-1 in seven innings the first game and 13-8 in nine innings in the second game.
GAME ONE: MBU 10, CBC 1
Starting pitcher
Anthony Green went six strong innings and the offense picked up where it left off from his 18-run outburst on Tuesday, as the Spartans cruised to a 10-1 victory over the Mustangs in the first game of the day.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to confirm they continue to swing hot bats. MBU scored six runs on five hits in the first two innings to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.
Blane Besse was hit by pitch to begin the game and later came in to score on an
Alex Adams single. In the second the Spartans would send nine men to the plate in scoring five more runs. Besse got the first run of the inning home when he singled to score pinch-runner
Kevin Watkins.
DJ Schmidt followed with an RBI walk with the bases loaded. The next run scored when the Mustangs hurler unleashed a wild pitch that allowed
Cesar Soto to cross the plate, making it 4-0 with one out in the second. Adams followed with a two-RBI double to complete the five run second and the Spartans had a 6-0 lead.
MBU got two more runs in the fourth when Adams hit his second double of the game to once again score Besse who had earlier reached on a single.
Cole Robinson then hit a sacrifice fly to score
DJ Schmidt and the Spartans had lengthened the lead to 8-0 after four.
CBC got their only run of the game in the top of the sixth due to a single and a walk, then uncharacteristic back-to-back wild pitches by Green.
Robinson got that run back plus one in the bottom of the seventh when to he hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season through a stiff breezed coming in from left field. Adams scored ahead of Robinson and the Spartans had the final margin of 10-1.
Green, who came into the game second in the NAIA in strikeouts per nine innings with 16.09, struck out six and walked two in his six innings of work. He gave up just a single run on five hits in improving his record to 8-0 on the season and lowering his ERA to 3.35.
Adams was three for three in the game with four RBIs. Robinson was two for two with a home run and three RBIs.
GAME TWO: MBU 13, CBC 8
The second game followed the same script as many of the recent contests for MBU…they scored early runs and their lead was never truly threatened throughout.
This time the home crew put four runs on the board in the first inning.
Blane Besse led off with a walk and
DJ Schmidt was struck by a pitch. After an
Alex Adams fly out, the first time he was retired all day,
Cole Robinson singled up the middle to score Besse and Schmidt.
Blayne Yarger then drove home Robinson for the third run, before
Noah Hemphill doubled to plate Yarger. The Spartans got four runs on three hits in the first inning.
It what became a theme of the day, the Mustangs got their first run of the day in the top of the second when a Spartan pitcher, this time
Tanner Young, threw a wild pitch with a runner on third base.
In the bottom of the inning MoBap got the run back in an equally peculiar manner. Singles by
Cesar Soto and
DJ Schmidt and a subsequent stolen base by Schmidt gave the Spartans runners on second and third with one out.
Alex Adams struck out swinging but the ball got away from the CBC catcher and allowed Adams to reach. When the catcher threw to first base in an attempt to putout Adams, Soto came home to score. MoBap led 5-1 after two innings.
The game would stay that way until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans really broke loose, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Soto had the distinction of singling twice in the same inning, once to lead the inning off then a second time to drive two runs home. In the inning, Robinson and
Noah Hemphill had RBI singles, while Adams and Yarger got RBIs via fielder's choice grounders. The home team took an 11-1 lead into the fifth inning.
An RBI ground out and an RBI single accounted for two runs for CBC in the top of the fifth, but the Spartans countered with a run of their own when Yarger doubled scoring Robinson and Adams.
CBC scored a run in the eighth and three more in the top of the ninth to make the score more presentable but the Spartans prevailed 13-8.
Young got the victory on the mound and he is now 3-1 on the season. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.
Landon Albers saw his most extensive outing of the season by pitching three innings, giving up a run on two hits.
Austin Szverra pitched the ninth to finish out the game.
Yarger was three of five in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored. Robinson was three for four with three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Spartans and Mustangs will meet in their final regular season matchup tomorrow at Spartans Baseball Field beginning at Noon.
