PARK CITY, Kan.:Â The Missouri Baptist Men's wrestling team started its away campaign at the Falcon Open, capturing two third-place finishes, among other standout results.
For the Spartans, Jared Volcic, a transfer from Northwest Kansas Tech, started the day hot, claiming two pins in under two and a half minutes in the amateur division at the 285-pound weight class, advancing him into the quarterfinals where he controlled the match and won with a 7-2 decision Marcel Gonzalez of Pratt Community College. Volcic fell in the semifinal bout in a 6-2 decision to Gabe Kant of Labette Community College. Volcic finished 3rd, with a 5-1 record on the day.Â
Leviticus Lockett, the freshman from Jerome, Idaho, debuted in the navy and gray, claiming a third-place finish in the 184-pound weight class in the amateur division. Lockett outscored his opponents 37-15 in his first three bouts, leading to a semifinal appearance, but fell to Rodney Trotter of Labette Community College en route to a 5-1 record.Â
Joel Campbell lead the pack for the elite division competitors. Â The New Plymouth, Idaho native had his fair share of mat time in the 174-pound weight class, claiming five victories, four of which went the full seven minutes. Campbell started the day with a 5-3 decision over his opponent from Morningside (Iowa) before falling in his second-round bout. Â Campbell went on a four-match tear through the consolation bracket before falling short in the consolation-semifinal round.Â
Other standout performances for the Spartans include John Davis at 125 pounds in the amateur division, who finished 5-1 on the day with two pins, two tech falls, and a decision before hitting his match limit. Also at the same weight, Avelino Mota finished 4-2, with two falls and a tech fall.Nicholas Keim, who also appeared in the semifinal round on the opposite side of the bracket as teammate Lockett, finished the day 3-2 with two falls and a decision.Â
The Spartans continue their 2024-25 campaign at home when they host the MBU Duals next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in the Carl & Deloris Petty SRC. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m.
