SAINT LOUIS – Spartans starting pitcher
Jackson Wells added another chapter to his exemplary inaugural season at Missouri Baptist, with a gem against Williams Baptist University on Saturday. The left hander from Centralia, Mo. pitched seven and two thirds innings with just a run and four hits given up. The Spartans offense put up six runs in the sixth inning to help Wells coast to an 11-1 win over the Eagles, earning them a series sweep.
Wells held WBU hitless through three and a third innings before giving up a solo home run to the Eagles' Tyrell Burnett. The home run was the fourth of the three-game series for Burnett.
The Spartans got on the board in the first inning as the first five batters reached base.
Alex Adams singled to left field to score Blaine Besse, who had led off the game with a double. A failed pickoff attempt via a wild throw from the pitcher allowed
Blayne Yarger to score the second run of the inning as the Spartans took a 2-0 lead after one inning.
MBU doubled the lead in the third. This time it was the first three batters reaching on two singles and a walk.
Cameron Roll drove a run home on a fielder's choice, then designated hitter
Lucas Lefebvre hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0.
After the Burnett home run, both pitchers, Wells and the Eagles' Blane Wood, settled in to hold each team scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. That's when MBU sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits.
Cameron Roll got an RBI fielder's choice, followed by a two-RBI single for Lefebvre. Lefebvre stole second then scored on a Besse single. A groundout to the shortstop from Yarger brought home the fifth run of the inning, with Besse advancing to third. Besse would later score on a wild pitch to finish out the scoring and send the Spartans to the eighth inning with a 10-1 lead.
The Spartans were able to invoke the "run rule" in the eighth inning when Roll and
DJ Schmidt walked, then
Cesar Soto singled to center to score Roll and make the final score 11-1 in eight innings.
Besse was three for four at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Robinson and Lefebvre both had two hits, with the latter accounting for three RBIs. Through 37 games the Spartans had ground into just nine double plays, but the Eagles induced three from MBU in this game alone, limiting the damage the Spartans were able to do early in the game. A day after committing nine errors in two games, the Spartans played flawless defense on Saturday.
Wells improved to 8-1 on the season and shrunk his ERA to 2.03. He struck out five and walked two in the victory.
In the series sweep the Spartans outscored the Eagles 34-13. MBU is 30-8 this season with a 14-1 record in the American Midwest Conference. The series sweep sets up what could be a winner-take-all three game series with Columbia College (Mo.) at Spartan Field next weekend. Columbia completed a sweep of Central Baptist College (Ark.) on Saturday and are a perfect 15-0 in conference play. The winner of next weekend's series will position themselves to win at least a share of the AMC Regular Season title and have the inside track for the top seed in the AMC Championship Tournament which starts April 30 at Carshield Field in O'Fallon, Mo. Both teams will finish out conference play the weekend of Thursday, April 25 through 27.
The Spartans will step out of AMC play this Tuesday when they host Mission University (Mo.) for a single game with a 2:00 p.m. start.
