MARSHALL, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist men's wrestling team competed in the toughest NAIA in-season tournament, the Missouri Valley Invite. They were led by
Daryl Mills and
Joel Campbell, who both brought home a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Mills' impressive resume from the tournament included a 5-2 record on the weekend. Another highlight came in the consolation semifinal match when Mills picked up a 5-3 decision victory over no. 10 Roman De La Cruz of the University of Saint Mary. Mills also outplaced several ranked individuals en route to his fourth-place finish.Â
Campbell also battled through several rounds to his fourth-place finish. The Idaho native dropped a bout earlier in the tournament and fought through seven rounds to make it to the bronze match. Campbell collected an 8-2 record on the weekend, which included two falls and a technical fall.
The Spartans had two other wrestlers who made it to the blood round, the round to place.
Tyler Deen went 4-2 on the weekend, a technical fall and two major decisions.
Dillon Witt claimed three victories on the championship side of the bracket, which propelled him into the quarterfinals, but he was unable to string another win together.Â
The Spartans finished 13th overall in a tournament that hosted 20 of the top 25 teams.Â
The Spartan wrestling squad will travel back to Marshall, Mo., to compete in the Missouri Valley Open next Saturday, February 1, 2025. Wrestling will start at 10 a.m.
