KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Baptist University men's tennis made program history on Saturday, capturing its first-ever Heart of America Conference Tournament championship with a 4–2 victory over No. 2 seed William Woods at Plaza Tennis Center. The title secures the Spartans an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala., set for May 12–16, as Missouri Baptist awaits its postseason draw during the NAIA Tennis Selection Show on April 28 at 3 p.m. C.T.
The top-seeded Spartans completed a dominant run through the conference tournament, opening Friday with a 4–0 sweep of No. 8 seed Baker in the quarterfinals before blanking No. 4 seed Texas Wesleyan, 4–0, in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. Missouri Baptist capped the weekend by defeating William Woods for the second time this season, finishing a season sweep of the Owls at 2–0.
Despite dropping the doubles point in Saturday's final, the Spartans answered in singles play with four victories to claim the title. Strahinja Radanovic battled to a three-set win at No. 2 singles, while Sebastian Junghanns added a straight-set victory at No. 3 to swing momentum in Missouri Baptist's favor. Arkhip Tokmakov outlasted his opponent in three sets at No. 5, and Nicolas Sanchez sealed the championship-clinching fourth point with a comeback victory at No. 6 singles.
The historic title marks another milestone in what has already been a record-setting season for Missouri Baptist, and head coach Scott Goodyear said the accomplishment was made even more meaningful by the group that delivered it.
"Winning our first men's conference championship is awesome, but doing it with this group of guys was special," Goodyear said. "They are all enjoyable to be around and such tough-minded competitors. I'm so happy for our three seniors — Luca, Straka and Nico — that they all got this experience."
With the conference crown secured, the Spartans now shift their focus to the national stage and their upcoming trip to Mobile.
