Missouri Baptist University alum Samuel Pearson was named the Spartans' head women's basketball coach in March 2018. Prior to taking over, Pearson served as the top assistant for Iris Dixon, who stepped aside from coaching to become Associate Athletics Director & Senior Women's Administrator.

Under Pearson's guidance, the 2017-18 Spartans recorded their highest win total since 2010-11 going 14-15 overall. The team also won a program-best 12 games in conference finishing 12-12 against AMC opponents.

"Sam brings a wealth of basketball knowledge, enthusiasm and energy as a new chapter for the women's basketball program begins," Dixon said on the hiring of Pearson as head coach.

Pearson first came to Missouri Baptist in 2011-12 as a transfer from Southeast Missouri State University. He suited up and started 13 games for the MBU men's basketball team before sustaining a season-ending injury in his final year of eligibility. Before the injury, Pearson led the team in scoring (16.2 ppg) and free-throw percentage (.797), while averaging 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

After transferring from SEMO, Pearson received his bachelor's degree in 2013 and master's degree in 2015 from Missouri Baptist.
