BOWMAN LEADS SPARTANS VOLLEYBALL TO VICTORY IN LONG-AWAITED HOME OPENER

St. Louis, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist women's volleyball team only needed three sets to extend its winning streak to six, going on to a 25-14,25-21, 25-18 sweep over the Park University Pirates on Tuesday evening.

MBU came out a bit sluggish at the beginning of the first set, but quickly rebounded. Tied at five early, the Spartan offense began to click and never slowed down. Jessica Bowman recorded eight kills in the first set alone to lead the offense to a 25-14 victory. Bowman finished the match with 10 kills and an outstanding .563 hitting percentage to lead all players.

In the second set, Park jumped out to an early lead. Pirates' senior Gabriela Garcia combined with Mariana Vogado and Patricia Souza for 13 kills in the first two sets. Park took a late lead, 19-15, but MBU did not back down. Casey Chernin led the Spartans back from the brink and helped the team to a 25-21, comeback victory.

Park played MBU evenly yet again in the third set. The Pirates were tied at four early and continued to push the favored Spartans to work for every point. Though the Pirates did not put up big offensive numbers, it was a strong blocking game that kept them in the match the entire way through. Park recorded 9 blocks as a team, but was unable to put up points in key situations, dropping the third set 18-25.

Missouri Baptist improved to 23-2 on the season and will go right back to work tomorrow night at home against the number three-ranked Columbia College Cougars.
