St. Louis, Mo. - Maryville's Asa Toney led all scorers with 25, as the Saints men's basketball team cruised to a 69-50 victory over Missouri Baptist University on Monday.
The Spartans came into the game winners of their previous six games, but ran into a very disciplined NCAA Division II team. Missouri Baptist had a difficult time putting points on the board and fell victim to the high-tempo Saints' offense.
The Maryville offense was hot in the first half, shooting 65% from the floor to take a 43-24 lead into halftime. In the second frame, the Spartans began to raise its level of play, as the Saints could not maintain its high shooting percentage. MBU's Erik Hunter went 4-7 from three-point range, finishing with 12 points, to lead the Missouri Baptist offense.
A big source of pride in the game for the Spartans was the free throw shooting. The team shot an incredible 94% from the foul stripe in the game, but it was not enough to set-up a second-half comeback.
Overall, the Saints recorded 23 points off 18 MBU turnovers in the game, which ended up being the difference. Missouri Baptist drops to 9-6 on the season with the loss, as Maryville improves to 6-2. The Spartans will get a little time to rest over the holidays before picking it back up on Jan. 2, 2012 at the Ozarks Classic against Bellevue University.
