Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist Spartans won two matches on Friday over Wiley College and Briar Cliff University, to remain a perfect 7-0 on the season.
MBU, who traveled to the Columbia College Tournament for the holiday weekend, started the weekend off with a difficult, straight set, victory over Wiley College. The team fought off several set points in the first two games, to earn 29-27 and 27-25 victories which allowed the team to gain an early mental edge in the tournament.
Casey Chernin led the Spartan offense with 16 kills and 3 aces, while Lauren Stuckel continued to set-up the offense with 29 assists. On defense, Tracey Abell had a strong performance, recording 20 digs for the match. As the team went on to complete the sweep with a 25-21 final set win, it gained momentum for their second match just hours later.
In the second match, the Spartans controlled the pace from the outset. Stuckel had another outstanding performance, posting 32 assists, while Casey Chernin again led the team in kills with 12. These performances, combined with another solid team effort, led MBU to its second, straight set victory, 25-15, 25-16 and 26-24.
The Spartans will attempt to remain perfect on Saturday with two more matches, the first against University of Texas at Brownsville. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
