SPARTANS HOLD-OFF OWLS IN REMATCH

FULTON, Mo. - Missouri Baptist continued its solid play this season on Wednesday night against a motivated William Woods team, winning 3-1.

Missouri Baptist (29-2, 13-2 AMC) built a 12-7 advantage early and continued its success throughout the first set. MBU looked much different than the last time that the teams met this season in St. Louis, as Maddy Hammack led the way. The junior recorded six kills with an attack percentage of .556. Also hot was setter Ally Krus. The freshman recorded 15 assists in the game.

The second set began in a similar fashion as MBU jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead and found success on the outside. Taylor Cook recorded five kills with an extraordinary .833 attack percentage while Hannah Carey dominated play from the service line. The British import posted three aces in the set.

The Spartans had experienced this before in 2012 at home. The Owls had given up the first two sets in St. Louis before coming back to force a fifth set and nearly handing MBU its first loss of the season. Though Missouri Baptist recovered to squeak-out an 18-16 win to preserve a 19-0 record.

As the third set began, the last match between the two teams was not lost on William Woods. The Owls led 4-2 in the early going and continued building upon it. As MBU tried to figure out what was going on, the Owls had amassed a 12-7 lead, looking to pull the upset.

Led by Emma Aschenbrenner (4 kills, 2 blocks), William Woods pressured Missouri Baptist, but the Spartans closed late. Sound defense and the clutch setting of Ally Krus put MBU back into the match, but could not make-up enough ground, dropping the third set 23-25.

The fourth set began as close as the third ended, but Missouri Baptist soon returned to form. The Spartans managed to take an 18-10 lead on the way to an 25-20 set victory and a 3-1 match win.

With the win, Missouri Baptist moves to 29-2. The team will return home on Friday evening to face Stephens College at 7:00 p.m. in the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
