ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Kristyne Smyth carried the Missouri Baptist women's basketball team on the road to the 64-62 victory over the Missouri Valley Vikings. Smyth had 25 points and shot 50 percent from the field.
Missouri Valley jumped out to the early lead over the visiting Spartans. MBU only tied the game twice and never held the lead in the first half. The Vikings built a ten point lead with 11:56 to go in the first half and did not back down there. They pulled out to a 14 point lead, before Smyth said enough was enough.
Smyth scored a basket with 1:02 to go in the half and then forced a steal and made both free throws to cut the lead for the Vikings to 35-25 at the half.
The Spartans came out strong in the second half. They went on a 14-0 run to tie the game at 43 with 12:08 to play in the game, but the Vikings were not going to let this be an easy one for MBU.
Missouri Valley answered right back with an 8-0 run to stretch the lead back out with 9:52 to go in the game. Both teams battled back and forth for a little while leaving the Vikings with a seven point lead, 59-52, with 3:40 to go in the game.
The Spartans hit some timely free throws and Smyth added a basket to tie the game at 59 before she committed a foul and sent Missouri Valley to the line.
Lindsi Jackson made both free throws and Iesha McDaniel added a basket for the Spartans and the game was tied at 61 with one minute to play in the game.
Senior Mandy Kirby hit a shot with 17 seconds left to give Missouri Baptist their first and only lead of the game, but proved to be all the Spartans needed to get the win 64-62.
Taylor Klingelhofer was the second leading scorer for MBU with 11 points and added two rebounds. Haley Elders added eight points for the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist moves to 2-3 on the season. They come home to play Ashford University on Sat. Nov. 24. The game time is set for 2 p.m.
