ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Baptist University women's basketball team faced a feisty Ashford University Saints team on Sat. in front of packed MBU home crowd. The Saints took care of business early and often against the Spartans and took home the victory 62-51.
The Spartans started out hot in and control. MBU jumped out to a 14-5 lead with 13:08 left in the first half. However, the Saints were not going down without a fight.
The Saints went on an 11-2 run to close the Spartans lead to just one, 16-15 with under eight minutes left in the first half. Both teams battled back and forth until the Saints decided to take charge of the game. The Spartans tailed 29-25 at the half.
The Saints started off the second half hitting three 3-pointers and proved to be too much to handle. The Spartans did not make any 3-pointers in the second half.
Quinn Rear led the Saints with 18 points including three 3-pointers, all in the second half. Briaunna Guthrie was second in scoring for Ashford with 14 points and went 3-4 from behind the arc.
The Spartans were led by Mandy Kirby who had 14 points and four rebounds. Kristyne Symth was next for MBU with 13 points.
Missouri Baptist drops to 2-4 on the season and looks to get back into the win column on Tues. night as they travel to the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
