Columbia, Mo. - After being down by 10 in the first half, the Spartans comeback fell just short in the second half against Columbia College, falling 67-59.
The team faced a tough first place Columbia team that previously beat the Spartans at MBU 66-46. The Cougars got off to a fast start, pushing their lead to double-digits late in the first half. The Spartans battled and narrowed the lead down to 37-27 at the end of 20. The team shot 39%, while the Cougars shot an impressive 46%.
Columbia was able to extend its lead to 17, putting the Spartans on their heels with 13 minutes to go in the second half. However, the team continued to knock down shots and before the crowd knew it, the lead was down to single digits.
Columbia was able to fend off the Spartans late, for the eight point win. A key stat in the game, Columbia out-rebounded the Spartans 49-35.
Missouri Baptist had four players reach double figures. Janelle Hensold led the way with 16 points and four rebounds. Mandy Kirby added 15 points on 6-10 shooting, Lauren Taylor and Andrea Seabaugh each had 11. Heather English led the way for the Cougars with 15 points. Also, having a strong game was Airelle Eldridge with 14 points and Ashley Fisher chipped in 10.
The Spartans will host Hannibal-LaGrange at 2:00 p.m. on February 18th. Prior to the game the team will honor its seniors in the final home game of the season.
