SPARTAN LACROSSE COMES-UP ONE VICTORY SHY OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Missouri Baptist scored just twice in the first 30 minutes of play, which led to a 12-6 loss to Washington University on Sunday in the GRLC Tournament Championship game.

Missouri Baptist (8-7) was hoping to avenge a loss to the Bears early in the season, but was unable to produce enough offense to come back from the first-half deficit.

Washington University struck first, netting four unanswered goals to take a 4-0 lead with 13:52 remaining in the second quarter. Missouri Baptist failed to get on the board for the first 20 minutes of play, until Ryan Zimmer notched his first goal of the game with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.

The Bears quickly answered the first Missouri Baptist goal just seven seconds later on Dan Fleisher's shot. Zimmer got his second goal of the game a minute later, but that is all the Spartans were able to manage in the half.

Down 6-2 heading into the second half, senior Brandon Horschig stepped-up for his team. Horschig scored two goals in a matter of two minutes to make it a 6-4 game.

As Missouri Baptist showed signs that a comeback was imminent, Washington University stepped-up its offense. The Bears scored four unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes of the third quarter to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

For Washington University, the offense was led by Dan Fleisher. The senior was named tournament MVP for his excellent offensive production, including the four goals he posted against Missouri Baptist in the championship game.

Though the team played hard, the Spartans suffered the loss and ended its season with an 8-7 record.
