ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The 16th-ranked Missouri Baptist volleyball team made quick work of Lyon College in Wednesday's doubleheader, winning 3-0, 3-0.
Missouri Baptist (10-0, 5-0 AMC) recently tumbled in the national rankings, down two spots, but attempted to turn heads with two dominant victories. The Spartans came out of the gate sluggish and trailed the Scots 9-10 early in the first set. MBU quickly composed itself and took over from that point forward.
After a 25-16 win in the set, Missouri Baptist went on to equally impressive 25-10, and 25-13 victories to take the first match. Freshman Taylor Cook led the Spartans with 10 kills, followed by Maddy Hammack with eight. Madeline Nesbit and Molly DeClue each had seven. Both Cook and Nesbit finished with attack percentages above .500.
In the second match, the Spartans continued their success. Cook was especially impressive, recording a career-high 13 kills in the match to lead both sides. Tina Debarry also came up big for MBU, posting seven kills of her own.
The Spartans began the evening down one of its most impressive newcomers. Freshman Hannah Carey was scratched prior to the game with a lingering foot injury, leaving a gap at outside in the starting rotation. Luckily for the Spartans, last season's AMC Freshman of the Year, Molly DeClue, was able to fill-in leaving Sara Mohesky to take over at libero. Carey is listed as day to day.
The Spartans will get right back at it as they welcome NAIA newcomer, Lindenwood University-Belleville on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. This will mark the final match of a five-match home stand for MBU before heading to Kansas City for two matches over the weekend.
