NO. 15 SCOTS END SPARTAN WIN STREAK

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist women's basketball shot just 31 percent on the night against conference newcomer Lyon College in a 76-65 defeat on Tuesday night. The loss broke a three-game Spartan win streak, its longest on the season.

Missouri Baptist (6-11) played a solid first half against the No. 15-ranked Lyon thanks to turnovers and clutch three-point shooting. Kristyne Smyth and Mandy Kirby had the touch from behind the arc as both went 2-3 from three-point range in the half. MBU shot an impressive 71 percent from three-point range and recorded five steals en route to a 35-33 lead heading into the break.

The Scots, true to form, came roaring back in the second half. Lyon went on a 13-2 run to take a 44-37 lead with just over 13 minutes to play. Both teams traded blows down the stretch.

As Lyon's Gabby Jenkins and Whitney Keith knocked-down shots just outside the paint, MBU's Smyth and Taylor Klingelhoefer answered with three-pointers to pull the Spartans within four, 46-50. Every time it seemed Lyon had pulled away, the Spartans were able to put themselves back into position to win the game.

By the end of the game, however, Lyon's offense was simply more consistent. For the game, the Scots shot 45 percent as opposed to MBU's 31 percent from the floor.

For the Scots, Suzanne Fincham and Debbie Onukwube led the way, combining for 36 points and 20 rebounds. Fincham finished the game with a double-double.

Missouri Baptist was led by Smyth and Kirby. Smyth finished the game with 15 points and went 3-6 from three-point range with four steals to boot. Kirby finished with 15 points and went 3-5 on three-point opportunities.

MBU will have just 48 hours to rest-up for an always-tough matchup on Thursday against Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
