MBU FALLS NINE SHORT IN WALNUT RIDGE

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist women's basketball led Williams Baptist College by two at the half on Saturday but an 11-point swing in the final 20 minutes proved to be the difference in a 75-66 loss on the road.

Missouri Baptist (10-18) played with the Eagles throughout the first half. Mandy Kirby got things started with an early bucket to take a 2-1 lead and MBU never trailed from that point until the second half. The Spartans led by as many as five points and took a 33-31 lead into the break.

In the second half, things changed dramatically. Led by the hot shooting of Cheyenne Childers, the Eagles mounted a 22-8 run to take control of the game with 11 minutes to go. The Spartans did not recover, though Leslie Damper, Lauren Taylor and Angela Talley all finished in double figures.

For the game, MBU shot just under 36 percent from the floor and 54 percent from the free throw line. The team did, however, give itself several opportunities to put-up points. The Spartans forced 23 turnovers in the game, which helped the team to maintain a lead throughout the first half.

For Williams Baptist, Childers led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sharonda Brabson and Michaela Thompson were also impressive. The two combined for 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Lauren Taylor had another fine outing for the Spartans and led her team with 16 points and shot 50 percent in the game. Leslie Damper went 2-4 from three-point range for Missouri Baptist and finished with 12 points. Angela Talley also had a solid performance for MBU. The freshman went 5-6 from the free throw line and picked-up 11 points in the process, a new career-high.

Missouri Baptist will return home for the final regular season game at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on Thursday when William Woods comes to St. Louis. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
