ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist women's volleyball completed its sweep of the Maryville University Classic on Saturday. The team dispatched host school Maryville to take home the championship and extended its win streak to six matches in the process.
Missouri Baptist (7-1) played a strong, efficient first set and posted a .290 attack percentage as a team. With the set tied at 16, the Spartans put together a 3-0 run to grab a three-point lead and the team never looked back. Maddy Hammack and Kayleigh Cox combined for nine kills and led the team to a 25-20 win.
The Spartans started to heat-up in game two, but as the Saints' student section got louder, Maryville began to surge. MU erased much of the Missouri Baptist lead to make it an 8-7 match, but MBU pulled away late to take the second set 25-17.
Missouri Baptist continued its momentum in the third set, though the Saints pressured the Spartans throughout. Maryville put together a 5-0 run to tie the match at eight, thanks to solid defense. MBU, however, put together a 4-0 run of its own to take a 12-8 lead and never looked back.
Hannah Carey recorded three aces in the match, two of which were back-to-back in the final set, helping the Spartans to the victory. Carey also took home All-Tournament Team honors along with Madeline Nesbit.
For Maryville, Hana Michael led the offense with seven kills and a .389 attack percentage.
Missouri Baptist will return to home court on Tuesday night when the same Maryville Saints team will take the short journey over to the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex for a 6:00 p.m. first serve.
