SMYTH’S CAREER DAY SEALS THE DEAL FOR SPARTANS

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist's Kristine Smyth showed why she should be considered one of the top offensive guards in the NAIA. The Oak Forest, Ill., native netted a career-high 28 points and led her team to a much needed 87-84 win over William Woods on Saturday afternoon.

Smyth, the shooting leader for Missouri Baptist, continued to lead her team on the court and made big shots down the stretch for the Spartans, while her supporting cast was nearly as effective. As a team, MBU shot 47 percent from the floor in the third conference victory of the season.

Taylor Klingelhoefer and Kennedy Smith also had a big day. Smith tied a career-high of 15 points, which she set back on Dec. 7 against Stephens College.

Klingelhoefer, the sophomore from O'Fallon, Ill., posted 18 points on the day. In her career, the guard is just 40 points away from tying last season's point total of 183 points. She is currently sitting at 143.

Missouri Baptist went into the half leading by three, but a flurry of perimeter shooting by William Woods from the outset of the second half changed the dynamic of Saturday's contest.

The Owls connected on three consecutive shots from beyond the arc to begin the half and went on a 9-2 run in the first 2:06 after the break. Overall in the second half, William Woods was a staggering 5-8 from three-point range (62 percent), which kept Missouri Baptist on its heels.

With 14 minutes remaining, the Spartans trailed by seven, but continued to play within Coach Iris Dixon's system and erased the Owl lead just two minutes later.

Though the game was back and forth down the stretch, the Spartans controlled the final two minutes with quality ball possessions and heads-up play by its leaders.

Next up for Missouri Baptist will be Williams Baptist College on Tuesday in Walnut Ridge, Ark. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
