SPARTANS GET FIRST WIN OF SEASON IN AMC OPENER

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist women's basketball put together its most explosive offensive output on the year Thursday evening against Benedictine-Springfield in an 88-41 win on the road.

Missouri Baptist (1-3, 1-0 AMC) cruised through the game start to finish, and posted its first halftime lead of the year. After 20 minutes of play, the Spartans led 50-16 and looked to be well on its way to the first win of the 2014-15 season.

MBU shot over 57 percent from the floor in the first half and finished the contest at 53 percent for the game, the first time of the season shooting over the 50 percent plateau. Though the team did struggle in the turnover battle early, the Spartans rallied in the second half. Missouri Baptist gave-up 11 first-half turnovers, but finished the contest with 14 overall.

For the second consecutive contest, MBU forced over 20 turnovers from its opponent. The Bulldogs committed 28 on the night, 17 of which were in the first half.

Johynn-a Evans led the Bulldogs on the night. The sophomore from Champaign, Ill., led the home team with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Taylor Klingelhoefer and Jasmine Jackson led the Spartans to their first win of the season. The duo combined for 29 points while Jerica Hawkins rounded-out the players in double digits with 11.

MBU point guard Aimee Iverson finished the contest with five assists, two shy of her career-high set on Nov. 12 against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). Trina Valencia, however, made her biggest impact in a Spartan uniform to date. The former Mid-Continent University Cougar posted a new career high with four steals in just over 17 minutes on the court.

With the win, Missouri Baptist improved to 1-0 in American Midwest Conference play and 1-3 overall. The team will try to make it two in a row on Saturday as they are set to host Hannibal-LaGrange in the second conference contest of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
