SETTLE POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN 74-61 LOSS TO WILLIAM WOODS

ST. LOUIS – After upsetting the Owls in the first meeting, William Woods used a second half surge to defeat the Missouri Baptist women's basketball team, 74-61. The Spartans and Owls were tied 27-27 at the half.

 

Missouri Baptist (8-16, 6-10 AMC) shot 35 percent (23-of-65) from the floor, and made just two three-point shots. The Spartans won the rebounding battle, 47-39, with 16 boards coming in the offensive zone. MBU turned the ball over 20 times, compared to 11 times by the Owls.
William Woods (17-8, 10-7 AMC) hit 24-of-63 (38%) of shots from the floor, but hit 21-of-24 free throw attempts.

Angela Talley led the Spartans with 19 points. She made 8-of-15 shots from the floor, hit 1-of-2 three-point shots, and made all three free throw attempts. Talley pulled down seven rebounds, with three coming in the offensive zone.

Morgan Settle posted her second career double-double after a 17-point, 11-rebound night. She made 6-of-15 shots from the floor, and hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She had six offensive and five defensive rebounds, and a team-high three steals.

The first half stayed tight for the whole 20 minutes. The Spartans trailed 7-4 with 16:29 left in the half, but went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Kristyne Smyth basket and free throw.

William Woods followed that run with a 10-2 run, which gave the Owls their biggest lead of the half, 17-13 with 11:16 left in the half.

The two teams would not be separated by more than three points for the final 11:16 of play.

Morgan Settle tied the game at 27-27 with 1:02 left in the half after ripping down an offensive rebound and putting it back up.

The Spartans shot 40 percent from the floor in the half on 11-of-27 shooting. The Owls were held to a dismal 21 percent from the floor, making just 7-of-33 shots.

In the second half, Missouri Baptist jumped out to a 35-31 lead with 17:38 left in the game, but the Owls took over from that point on.

After the two teams saw the score tied four times over the next three minutes, William Woods held a 48-46 lead with 11:35 left in the game.

The Owls went on a 20-3 run over the next nine minutes and took a 68-49 lead with 3:24 left in the contest.

The Spartans used a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 68-59, but ran out of time, as they trailed by nine with just 38 seconds left in the game. The Owls were able to run out the clock and finished the score on top, 74-61.

Missouri Baptist will host Williams Baptist on Tuesday at 5:30. The Spartans lost to WBC 76-75 earlier this season.
