Box Score ST. LOUIS – [Box Score] After winning the first match of the day with ease, the Missouri Baptist women's volleyball squad needed four sets to defeat host school St. Thomas University, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-10. The win improved the Spartans to 3-0 on the season.
Hana Carey led MBU with 15 kills on 28 swings. She also had a solo block and two block assists. "Hana stepped up in a big way for us," said head coach Chris Nichols. "Her energy was contagious to the rest of the team."
Sophomore Mallory Dillon pounded 14 kills on 23 swings and recorded four service aces.
Taylor Cook had 12 kills on 22 swings, had two service aces, six digs, and two solo blocks.
Jen Brendel was the other Spartan to record double-digit kills. She posted 10 kills on 16 swings, and also added a block assist.
Ally Krus posted 47 assists over the four sets, while Haley Pouliezos had six assists and 23 digs.
The Spartans did not start off the match on the right foot, as they fell to the Bobcats 25-23. MBU held a 22-21 lead late in the set, but could not hold off. It was the first set that the Spartans have lost in three matches this season.
In set two, Missouri Baptist corrected its path by winning 25-14. MBU hit .500 in the set with 16 kills on 24 swings. They held the Bobcats to just a dismal .050 attack percentage in the set.
Set three saw more momentum swing towards MBU, as the Spartans took the lead in the match 2-1 with a 25-16 victory. MBU posted 19 kills on 29 swings, an attack percentage of .517.
In the decisive set, Missouri Baptist had 17 kills on 28 attempts and won the set 25-10. St. Thomas hit just .080 in the set, which proved to be the difference.
The Spartans will now take on Warner University tomorrow at 10 am to conclude the invitational in Miami, Fla. "We need to come out strong tomorrow to finish the trip," said Nichols.
