SPARTANS ENTER COLLEGE FOOTBALL RANKS WITH LOSS AT SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist finally got underway with the inaugural 2014 campaign, but things ended on a sour note as the Spartans were shutout against the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. 77-0.

Special teams miscues and defensive lapses were at the center of the final score, but the end result was not indicative of either the effort or the overall goal of the game.

"Even though the game was out of hand, we never quit fighting," said Head Coach Jason Burianek. "We gave them as much as we could and I couldn't be more proud of them."

Southeast quarterback Kyle Snyder was very good in this one. The Barberton, Ohio native finished with 198 yards of passing and two rushing touchdowns before his night ended in the third quarter.

Redhawk running back DeMichael Jackson recorded 82 yards on the ground in three quarters with one touchdown. Jackson, the 5-10 Junior from Louisville, Ky., looked like a man on a mission and may have a nice season ahead of him in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Nothing in the way of points on the board for Missouri Baptist in the game, but there were several standout performances.

JP Lowery, the Redshirt Freshman from League City, Texas gained 48 yards on the ground and included a 20 yard pickup, the longest rush of the game for the Spartans.

Ryan Woodland was also tremendous for MBU. The cornerback was stellar, and kept star wide receiver Paul McRoberts in check all night. McRoberts, the preseason All-OVC receiver gained just 16 yards receiving with one touchdown on the game.

Something to take into consideration is that Southeast had 17 returning starters, 19 seniors and four Football Bowl Subdivision transfers on the 2014 squad. Missouri Baptist, on the other hand, had 61 freshman on the roster. On the whole, it was a postitive learning experience for the youthful Spartans.

Missouri Baptist will now head to No. 6-ranked University of Saint Francis next Thursday to take-on the Cougars.
