NO. 20 STATESMEN GROUND GAME TOO STRONG FOR SPARTANS

ST. LOUIS – [FINAL STATSMissouri Baptist football put two in the end zone, but could not stop the powerful option run game of No. 20-ranked William Penn in a 51-20 loss at home on Saturday. The game was the first home game of the inaugural 2014 season.

Missouri Baptist (0-4) found most of its issues in the first quarter, after having dug a 22-0 deficit in the first 15 minutes of play. The first score of the game came in the way of an interception by the Statemen' Kevin Schrauger. The junior linebacker returned the DeMarco Billups pass 47 yards to the house to make it a 6-0 deficit for MBU with just 26 seconds off the clock.

The Spartans got on the board in the second quarter, however. Alex McGlassion converted on a 26-yard field goal attempt to cut the William Penn lead to 22-3. The MBU kicker from Eureka, Mo. also posted his career-long on a 41 yard attempt shortly before the end of the half to make it a 30-6 lead for the visitors after 30 minutes.

After the half, Missouri Baptist seemed to get its offense clicking. Trailing 38-6, Billups found Alexis Nunley wide open in the end zone to post the first touchdown in team history before a home audience. The Spartans, however, had more in stock for the crowd of nearly 1,200.

In the fourth quarter, Billups added another first in team history as he became the first to throw multiple touchdown passes in a game. The Career Academy graduate found big tight end Kalen Petty just over the goal line on a 10-yard pass into the end zone, which capped the scoring for both teams.

Petty, the Gateway-STEM product locally in St. Louis, led the Spartans on the day with 80 yards of receiving and a touchdown. It was the second-consecutive game that the junior has caught a touchdown pass this season.

Missouri Baptist will head back out onto the road next weekend in the shortest trip of the season as the Spartans will take-on the Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Belleville, Ill.
