ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist put three touchdowns on the board, but were unable to come back from an early 14-point deficit in a 42-21 loss to the Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) Lynx on Saturday.
Missouri Baptist (0-6, 0-4 MSFA) struggled early, but began to come back in the second quarter after digging itself an early deficit. The Lynx stormed downfield on its first possession and posted the games' first touchdown. Tarean Austin connected with Walter Jackson on a 16-yard completion to make it 7-0 Lindenwood-Belleville.
On its second possession, Lindenwood doubled its lead thanks to another big drive, led by Kam Harris. The senior recorded the second score of the day on a seven yard rush to make it 14-0 Lynx. On the day, the tailback rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns.
MBU returned the favor early in the second quarter and cut the deficit in half, thanks to a big fumble recovery by the Spartan defense. Nathaniel Wurmb picked-up the loose ball on the sack, deep in Lynx territory, which set-up the first scoring drive of the day for the home team. Marshall Willingham collected his first touchdown of his career on an eight yard rush to make it a 14-7 game.
The Lynx posted two more touchdowns as time ticked down on the second quarter and entered halftime with a 28-7 lead.
Missouri Baptist scored early in the third quarter as quarterback Jacob Hunt broke-off his biggest play in his young career. The freshman signal caller busted a run to the outside for a 51-yard touchdown and made it a two touchdown game.
As the Lynx began to pull away, perhaps the most exciting play for the Spartans occurred. Midway through the fourth quarter, nose tackle Michael Luna picked-up a Lindenwood fumble and rumbled 83 yards for the score and cut the LU lead to a 14-point, 35-21 advantage.
Missouri Baptist will complete its longest home stretch of the season next Saturday when the Spartans welcome Olivet Nazarene to CBC. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
